Approach

Julia grew up learning the Suzuki method, which is a philosophy heavily based on listening and playing by “heart”. The philosophy was created by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, who believed that every child has the potential to learn an instrument and foster love for music if nurtured and taught in a compassionate way. Julia enjoys the principles of this philosophy, and approaches students with understanding and kindness. Each person is different, and it is paramount to explore different teaching methods when trying to learn an instrument.
Julia also has experience learning through the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) method, as well teaching the Yamaha Method, and finds that these methods are very helpful in expanding a student’s knowledge in music theory and practical music elements. Julia believes that giving students a strong foundation in the knowledge of musical principles allows for a deeper understanding and interpretation of any piece.
With the combination of these three teaching methods and philosophies as well as her experience at McGill University, Julia creates a balanced and well-rounded approach to teaching music; ultimately forming a healthy diet of music theory and music basics, as well as cultivating the ability for students to hear and interpret music through listening.
